2017 End-of-year Summary
Culled 50% of goats from beginning of 2017
Improved pasture rotation
Started vaccinating against CDT and pneumonia
Started combination deworming
Purchased 20 additional acres in late 2017, and plan to have it fenced by early 2018
Survived Hurricane Harvey – 40+ inches of rain– no significant issues
We culled heavily this year and brought in some replacement Kiko females. The Kiko does that we have previously purchased have required too much hands-on. They have not shown good instincts to raise babies without early help. They are just not as attentive as our Spanish goats.
We did not vaccinate our Spanish goats for CDT, but have decided to start vaccinating as a preventative.
We purchased an 11 yr old PB nanny from Waco….. DWE Peanut (aka Granny) in early 2017. She was thin, but we decided to take a chance on her. She quickly recovered on only pasture. As it turned out, she was thin because she didn't have teeth (old age) and the owner didn't have much pasture. She wasn't thin because of being unthrifty. She has essentially lost her teeth, so we will need to watch her during the winter…particularly while she is bred. She is a smart goat, often times circling back to steal our LGD’s food. Again, she is a proven survivor. She is taller than the typical Kiko. The previous owner said Peanut was their favorite goat. She has quickly become one of our favorites.
We also purchased a 7 yr old ¾ percentage nanny from Waco…..GSR Blue Lace (aka Speckles). She was already bred and had twin bucklings a month after purchasing her. She was a great mom with a good bag. Her grandfather was Blue’s Son, and grandmother Ms Moneybags, a Moneymaker daughter. Her genetics consist of 28% Moneymaker.
We were fortunate enough to purchase four NZ females from one of the early Kiko breeders. The 10 yr old nanny (WMB Midwest Jamie) was one of their best moms, and “alpha female” of the herd. We are pleased to have purchased Jamie, along with her NZ doeling Annie. Jamie is a large, heavy goat with long horns. We hope to get a couple more years of offspring from her. She is a proven survivor. We also purchased a 2 yr old NZ nanny and her NZ doeling from the same farm. The two yr old nanny is taller than most Kikos and is filling out well.
We purchased 5 PB doelings from Birmingham, Alabama area. We brought them back to Texas after being in the Birmingham area to watch our son play baseball. These goats are growing out well and are all bred to my NZ buck.
We purchased a 2 yr old NZ nanny from a couple in Liberty (north side of Houston). She has done well after raising her first offspring (twins) and is currently bred to my NZ buck. It took a while to get papers sorted-out since sire did not match and I had to work through two other Kiko breeders to get the correct sire. I purchased her as a PB, but as it turns out (due to wrong sire) she is a NZ Kiko.
We purchased two, 2 yr old PB nannies from the same family mentioned above in Liberty. These two came from the JCP Kiko ranch in San Angelo area. They have both kidded once. One of them developed pneumonia shortly after the hurricane, but is doing well now. This is one of the reasons I decided to vaccinate against pneumonia. They are both bred to my NZ buck.
